The walk is peaceful and scenic, weaving through pine forests and prayer-flag-lined ridges. Soon, you’ll reach a trail junction that separates the paths to Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp. Taking the route to Gokyo, begin a steady climb to Mong La Danda, a peaceful spot perched on a hillside, offering breathtaking views of Ama Dablam and Thamserku—both soaring sharply into the sky like icy cathedrals. Setting off from Machhermo, the trail leads through a wide, high-altitude valley framed by snow-dusted ridges. Along the way, you pause at a small village for a warm cup of tea, allowing time to take in the serene beauty of the alpine landscape. Roughly an hour after the break, the first of the Gokyo Lakes comes into view—a shimmering expanse of turquoise water nestled amid barren hills and ice-fed streams. Not long after, the second lake appears, just as mesmerizing with its glacial hues and stillness that reflects the sky. Another gentle ascent brings you to the third lake, the most famous and stunning of them all. Its vast, glassy surface mirrors the towering white wall of Mt. Cho Oyu, creating an unforgettable scene of raw Himalayan grandeur. Here, in this ethereal setting, you’ll enjoy a well-earned lunch by the lakeside, with the silence broken only by the breeze and the distant crack of shifting ice. Afterward, take a short hike up to the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalayas—a powerful, humbling reminder of nature’s magnificence and fragility, as it continues to recede due to climate change. From here, it’s a short walk to Gokyo Village, a peaceful settlement perched beside the third lake.
