Once you've conquered the climb, the hardest part of the day is behind you. The trail soon reconnects with the road and levels out, offering an easier, mostly flat walk along the Markha River. Trek to Markha Valley (Approx. 06 to 07 hrs. trek/walk)
We set off on our trek deeper into the breath-taking Markha Valley, where the landscape unfolds into a stunning display of nature. The lush greenery along the riverbanks contrasts beautifully with the warm ochre hues of the surrounding mountains, creating a vivid and captivating scene. As we progress, we encounter multiple river crossings, which we navigate either by wading through the clear waters or traversing small, charming bridges that connect the banks. The trail from Skiu to Markha is relatively easy, making it accessible to trekkers of various skill levels. However, it is long, inviting us to take our time and immerse ourselves in the serene beauty of the valley. With each step, we are rewarded with panoramic views of the majestic peaks and the gently flowing river, enhancing our sense of adventure and tranquillity. As the day draws to a close, we finally arrive in Markha, the largest village in the valley. Here, the atmosphere is peaceful, and the warmth of the local community is palpable. Dominating the landscape above the village is a charming monastery, perched high on a hillside. We will take the opportunity to visit this serene site, where we can enjoy sweeping views of the valley below and reflect on the path we’ve traversed throughout the day.

Today marks the beginning of the trek's most stunning segment. As we venture into the Upper Markha Valley, the landscape unfolds magnificently around us. Along the way, we are treated to spectacular views of Kang Yatse, an almost perfectly pyramid-shaped peak that commands attention. We start our journey by taking the trail that ascends from Markha village. As we follow the path alongside the Markha River, keep an eye out for a wooden plank bridge; however, we’ll bypass it and continue with the river on our right. After about 2 kilometres, we’ll encounter our first challenge—wading through the Markha River. Be prepared to cross the river at least twice throughout the day. Following our second river crossing, we’ll embark on a 2-hour hike to Umlung, a small settlement nestled in the valley. As we approach Umlung, look for the Umlung Gompa, and make your way to it from the base to reach the village. As we climb away from Umlung, we’ll catch our first glimpse of Mt. Kang Yatse—a truly awe-inspiring sight that will take your breath away. Continuing for another two hours, we’ll skirt along a gorge that leads us to the picturesque village of Hankar, a beautiful spot to pause and soak in the surroundings.

Day 7
Trek to Nimaling (Approx. 05 to 06 hrs. trek/walk)
Today’s trek is short yet set amidst stunning landscapes. Take your time and soak in the scenic beauty as you follow the path, which initially climbs steeply from Hankar. After approximately 1 kilometre, the trail divides; avoid the path leading upwards towards the Zalung Karpo La pass and continue along the lower trail. Another kilometre ahead lies the campsite of Thochuntse, set in lush green fields with a couple of teahouse tents. Shortly after Thochuntse, you’ll encounter a fork; take the path on the left. The trail remains steep for about an hour before levelling out gradually. Soon, you’ll arrive at a picturesque pond with the majestic Kang Yatse as a backdrop—a perfect spot to enjoy your packed lunch. From the pond, the trail gently descends to the expansive, breezy plateau of Nimaling. Despite its high altitude, Nimaling is remarkably green and serves as a summer pasture. During the trekking season (June to September), a tea house and numerous ready-to-use tents provide a cozy resting spot for the night.

Day 8
Trek to Chokdo via Kongmaru La (Approx. 05 to 06 hrs. trek/walk)
From Nimaling, follow a clear, well-worn trail that heads eastward towards Kongmaru La (5260 m). The ascent takes about two hours, but the steady climb rewards you with incredible panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Upon reaching the pass, take a well-deserved rest to absorb the scenery before the descent. The trail down from Kongmaru La is rugged and demands careful footing as it winds steeply downward across loose rocks. After the initial descent, the path enters a narrow, dramatic canyon that runs for 2 to 3 kilometers. The high, sheer rock walls here create an immersive atmosphere, contrasting with the wider, open trails of the earlier trek. After navigating the canyon, you’ll reach Sukarmo, where a few teahouse tents offer a chance to rest or grab a light refreshment. If you’re feeling energized, continue for another hour to Chokdo, a quaint village with homestay options. Spending the night here provides a more immersive experience, allowing you to interact with the local culture while enjoying a well-earned rest.
