With each step, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the majestic peaks and the gently flowing river, enhancing your sense of adventure and tranquillity. As the day draws to a close, you finally arrive in Markha, the largest village in the valley. Here, the atmosphere is peaceful, and the warmth of the local community is palpable. Dominating the landscape above the village is a charming monastery, perched high on a hillside. opens in all its glory, with the majestic Kang Yatse—an almost perfectly pyramid-shaped peak—dominating the horizon. The trail ascends gently from Markha village, following the course of the Markha River. You’ll pass a wooden plank bridge on your left, but continue straight, keeping the river to your right. After roughly 2 kilometres, the adventure begins in earnest with your first river crossing—be prepared to wade through the Markha River at least twice today. Once across, the path climbs steadily for about two hours to Umlung, a quiet settlement tucked in the valley. As you approach, look for the Umlung Gompa and follow the trail from its base to reach the village. Climbing out of Umlung, you’re rewarded with your first spectacular view of Mt. Kang Yatse—a sight that will leave you in awe. The trail then contours along a scenic gorge for another two hours, leading to the charming village of Hankar. It’s a perfect place to pause, rest your legs, and take in the serene beauty of the valley.

Take it slow and let the landscape reveal itself as the trail climbs steeply out of Hankar. After about 1 kilometre, the path forks—keep to the lower trail, avoiding the steeper route towards Zalung Karpo La Pass. A short distance ahead, you’ll reach the lush green fields of Thochuntse, where a couple of teahouse tents make for a charming rest stop. Beyond Thochuntse, another fork appears; take the left path. The ascent remains fairly steep for about an hour before easing into a gentle, more forgiving gradient. Soon, you’ll arrive at a tranquil pond framed by the majestic Kang Yatse—a perfect spot to pause and enjoy your packed lunch while taking in the breathtaking view. From here, the trail descends softly onto the wide, windswept plateau of Nimaling. Despite its high altitude, Nimaling bursts with alpine greenery and serves as a summer pasture for local herders. During trekking season (June to September), a small tea house and several ready-to-use tents offer a warm, welcoming place to rest for the night.

The steady ascent takes about two hours, gradually opening up sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Upon reaching the pass, take a well-earned break to soak in the dramatic Himalayan scenery—it’s a moment to truly savour. The descent from Kongmaru La is steep and rocky, demanding careful footing as the path zigzags down across loose scree. After the initial drop, the trail slips into a narrow, striking canyon that stretches for 2–3 kilometres. Towering rock walls rise dramatically on either side, creating an awe-inspiring contrast to the wide-open landscapes of earlier days. Emerging from the canyon, you’ll arrive at Sukarmo, where a few teahouse tents offer a welcome spot to rest and refresh. If you still have the energy, continue trekking for about an hour to Chokdo—a charming village with simple homestays. Spending the night here adds a layer of authenticity to the journey, giving you a chance to connect with the local culture and enjoy a peaceful, well-deserved rest.
