At the same time, the magnificent Karakoram range comes into view ahead. We descend through the rugged landscape, passing the North Pollu checkpost and the remote village of Khardung, before arriving at Khalsar village (3264 m) by the scenic Shyok River. Day 5

Acclimatising to the altitude in Hunder

Today, we take it easy as we adjust to the altitude, setting out on a gentle day hike to Diskit Monastery (3142 m). The walk offers stunning views of the Nubra Valley, where towering mountains contrast with the unexpected sight of dunes stretching between Hunder and Diksit. The trail is mostly flat, making for a relaxed walk across the valley floor toward Diskit, the administrative centre of the region. Diskit Monastery stands as the oldest and largest monastery in Nubra, established in 1420. Perched above is an awe-inspiring 105-ft (32 m) statue of the Buddha, watching over the valley with serene grandeur. After we return to Hunder for lunch, there’s an exciting chance to visit the nearby dunes and encounter the rare Bactrian camels. These two-humped camels, once essential for Silk Road traders passing through the region, have thrived in Nubra since trade declined in the 1950s. Thanks to a local conservation program, these magnificent animals continue to flourish in the valley, and we’ll have the unique opportunity to see them up close—a true highlight of the day.

We set off into the valleys this morning with a short 3km drive to Hunder Gompa, where our trek officially begins. Leaving the main valley, we veer into a narrow side valley, immersing ourselves in a quieter, more untouched landscape. The walking today is straightforward, as we follow a wide 4x4 trail through a dramatic gorge, with towering rock walls flanking us as we steadily ascend. Keep an eye out for Bactrian camels, often seen grazing amid the gorge's stunning, multi-coloured rocks. After around 8km, we come across a small Droksa (shepherd camp), where a few trees offer a welcome break from the sun. The valley starts to open up, and we’ll set up camp at a point where the valley splits, near the picturesque village of Wachan.

We begin by following the left-hand valley, steadily climbing toward Sernang, a small settlement of houses and fields. This will be the last village we encounter until we reach Phyang. As we continue up the valley, we may need to cross the river several times, depending on the water level (we’ll have ropes for assistance, and it’s highly recommended to bring river-crossing sandals). We reach the Snia Valley, a large valley branching off to the right, and cross over to the far side, where we camp near the junction. The afternoon is free to explore the surrounding hills, offering breathtaking views and a chance to appreciate the region's spectacular natural beauty fully.

Surrounded by rugged, unnamed peaks and passes, this valley is largely untouched, with only shepherds inhabiting it during the summer months. Before Ladakh had roads, these ancient passes were essential routes for local travellers, but now they’re mostly home to wildlife. Stay alert for sightings of marmots, foxes, and even wolves, and if you're incredibly lucky, you might spot the elusive snow leopard that hunts in these remote hills. Passing several shepherd camps, we’ll set up camp at a peaceful spot near the junction of the valley, close to the river.

This picturesque spot is a favourite among shepherds who bring their sheep, yaks, and dzos to graze in the fertile meadows.
